What is Liquid Scenery? READ THIS!
Until now if a virtual pilot wanted to enjoy add-on scenery for Flight Simulator there was only one way to go. Find an add-on scenery download that looked nice, download it, unzip it, install it and then check it out in the game. While good for facilities like airports, this doesn't leave a lot of room for adventure related scenery. Also these scenery addon files are usually quite large and for dial-up users it can take a long time to build a good collection of scenery addons. Using the old method, all scenery is stuck in one spot...forever in time.

Liquid Scenery allows Hovercontrol scenery administrators to define scenery types and locations at any time. Then every time you use the Liquid Scenery client to "fetch" the latest scenery you get the most recent scenery objects and locations from the server. Using Liquid Scenery technology, no matter how much scenery has been added by the Hovercontrol scenery administrators the "fetch" process only takes a matter of seconds! Liquid Scenery is especially useful for mission oriented scenery such as accidents, emergencies, or search and rescue. When NOT knowing what to expect...can be a lot more fun!

What Liquid Scenery is Not.
Liquid scenery does not create scenery that moves around dynamically by itself in the game "as you watch". It also does not create random scenery of any kind. Each scenery item is placed specifically by Hovercontrol scenery administrators. Liquid Scenery does not care what version of Flight Simulator you are using and does not change, overwrite, or modify any default Microsoft files. Liquid Scenery does not care what aircraft you are flying, and will not allow aircraft to interact dynamically with the scenery. As this is impossible in Flight Simulator. Liquid Scenery does not care if you are flying by yourself or online with others.

What Liquid Scenery Requires
On most normal windows systems Liquid Scenery will require Flight Simulator (FS2002 or FS2004 is best) and an internet connection. The internet connection is only needed when performing the "Fetch" process using the Liquid Scenery client program.

Non-Hovercontrol Free-Ware Scenery Object Credits:
Hovercontrol has tried to include a wide variety of scenery objects in this first release of Liquid Scenery. Many of the scenery objects included were either new scenery designs specifically for this package, or high-quality frame rate friendly scenery objects designed by other members of the free-ware scenery community. Where possible, written permission was obtained to include scenery objects from other free-ware public domain scenery designers. We would like to thank the following individuals for their contributions to free flight simulation scenery development, as well as to this project:
  • Frank Betts - Various wonderful Bush related scenery items, Cabins, Boxes, etc.
  • Robert Palmer - Small Aircraft collections compiled by Robert Palmer
  • Dana McGee - Small Aircraft collections compiled by Robert Palmer
  • Eric Johnson - Small Aircraft collections compiled by Robert Palmer
  • Jerry Arzdorf - Small Aircraft collections compiled by Robert Palmer
  • Bob Wening - Small Aircraft collections compiled by Robert Palmer

  • Jordan Moore - Logging Equipment, Heavy Equipment, Worksite stuff, Search and Rescue Stuff, Emergency Vehicles, Hot Air Balloons, Boats, Real Cow, Horse, Deer., Etc.

Obtaining written permission from all authors was not possible due to many packages being quite old, and some including no contact information. We hope we have brought some new life to some of these great scenery objects. This project is free, and significantly improves the capabilities of the scenery development commnunity, however if you feel that your scenery contributions should not be included in this package please contact webmaster@hovercontrol.com to have your work removed from the project. Hovercontrol.com always respects the rights of free-ware scenery developers. After all, we're developers too!

"How-To" Diagrams...
The following visual aids will help you install and use the very simple Liquid Scenery Client. Take a few moments to familiarize with this information. It could save you some frustration and a lot of questions.

1. Download the HCLS.exe program.
2. Double-click downloaded file to get the following screen.

3. Use the Next button to get to the install location screen.
4. Liquid Scenery MUST be installed to the main FS folder.
Normally this would be something like:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9

5. Complete the Installation.
6. Liquid Scenery will be added to your desktop and start menu.

7. This is the Liquid Scenery client program.

8. You can only "Get Scenery" or "Exit".
9. BEFORE starting Flight Simulator. Click Get Scenery...
10. You SHOULD receive the following response.

11. Click Ok.
12. Exit the Liquid Scenery program. By Clicking "Exit".
13. Start Flight Simulator.
14. Use World->Goto Airport to move your aircraft to KMSO (Missoula, MT).

15. You should see a couple of Hot Air Balloons just to the SouthWest of the airfield.

16. If you do not see the balloons then you will want to proceed to the troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting Steps...
If you are having problems with Liquid Scenery appearing in your Flight Simulator make sure to check the following items first.

1. Make sure that you installed LiquidScenery to the MAIN folder for your FS2002 or FS2004.
This is normally at:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9
or
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002
or
Where ever you happened to install your flight simulator.

2. Makes sure that you are able to run the LiquidScenery program, and get a Success message after "fetching" the latest scenery.
You should be able to double check this is working properly by confirming that you have a file called HCLS1.bgl in the following folder under the main flight simulator folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\[Main FS Folder]\Addon Scenery\Scenery\HCLS1.bgl

3. Make sure that your Addon Scenery folder shows up and is enabled in your Scenery Library. This should be working by default when you install Flight Simulator. However, you can double check it by using the "Settings" Option from the initial menu that pops up when you start FS2004 or from the World->Scenery Library option in FS2002.

4. Make sure that your Scenery Complexity slider located in Options->Settings->Display->Scenery is set to at least "Normal" or higher.

5. Still don't see the balloons at KMSO?
Some users will need to move any additional scenery packages that they have added to the [MAIN FS FOLDER]\Addon Scenery folder to another location.

A. Remove these downloaded scenery areas from your Scenery Library in FS (do not remove Addon Scenery).
B. Exit FS.
C. Then create a new folder anywhere you like, and move your downloaded scenery folders into your new folder.
D. Start up FS, and re-add the scenery areas from the new location you created.
E. Because of the way that Flight Simulator treats the add-on scenery directory, it is recommended that you don't add scenery packages that you have downloaded to the Addon Scenery folder.
Instead, use one that you have created. The default FS "Addon Scenery" directory should look like this!
(It may not have a SCENERY.dat file....that's ok).
