Start-Up Procedure

Initial Power Up

Let's not waste too much time getting into the cockpit. Before we fly, we'll need to make sure the helicopter is started properly and ready for lift off.

Starting from Dead Cold

We'll be starting from the "dead cold" configuration. This means all systems, both electrical and otherwise will be powered down completely. As if we have just gotten to the helicopter for the first time. The panel for this scenario should like the following:

Starting Sequence

The following image will help demonstrate a simple and safe sequence to use when starting the JetRanger.

1. Master Battery/Electrical Switch ON
2. Master Avionics Switch ON
3. Check Fuel Levels
4. Fuel Valve Master ON
5. Nav Lights ON
6. Monitor Rotor RPM until 100%
7. Calibrate Altimeter for your flight (the "b" key).
8. Set Nav/Comm/Radios (covered later)

For those that are impatient, many of the simple helicopter designs will let you use CTRL+E to automatically run the start sequence. It's a good idea to double check the settings and rotor RPM before continuing.

Up and Running

Providing you have followed the steps above, and have double checked your rotor RPM is 100%, you should be ready for take off.

Apply what you have learned in this lesson and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
