Hardware You will Need

In order to effectively use and enjoy modern PC-based helicopter flight simulation software such as Microsoft Flight Simulator X, you will need to own a joystick of reasonable quality that has the minimum following features:

1. Throttle Control (usually a slider)
2. Twist Grip Control (for rudder/anti-torque rotor control)
3. A high-hat type thumb switch (for viewing around)
4. Several additional buttons and/or switches for controlling your most common aircraft commands.

If you would like to get a more accurate feeling for controlling helicopters, it is recommended that you use rudder-pedals in addition to a high-quality joystick. Pedal control is an important aspect of helicopter flight, and it can not be fully appreciated by using a joystick alone.
