I think most of us are still here... I still check the forums but less frequently than it used to be....

We probably need something new to be excited (helicopters in FSW ?)

I am relentlessly working on my Airland project announced by Sergio last year, and it absorbs 100% of my free time...

Also answering to HTR issues on a regular basis

Two years ago I uploaded to this site the adaptation to FSX of the Icaro AW139 with many improvements. I never received a reply. And today, the model is not in the file library yet.

I uploaded it in AVSIM and Helisimmer.com and it has make more than 2500 downloads. Today I have released a new version v2.0 beta. In a few hours it has been downloaded nearly 100 times.

Come on, ask me again why people went to other places!!!

I think its a number of factors but for me and FSX particularly.  Since the online flying went all about training away from the fsinn system.
No-one was around to fly with on the hovercontrol server. When training was on Fsinn at least you could see something happening here. But there's no-one practising at the hover circles at KMSO anymore. I know the training isnt done like that now... But that's where I first met someone else from hovercontrol and anyone receiving training even if an instructor wasn't there could tell a newbie what he was doing and they would have a go too. Starts the whole online interaction thing!

I have FSX-SE installed and since then hardly any of my old fsx add ons work in it (obviously I need to learn how to install em into fsx-se)

I prefer to fly DCS world or X-plane and I do these pretty much on my own or with a friend who enjoys the same. It's more fun for me making missions in DCS for the Gazelle and Huey to fly into some combat scenarios.

I do check the forums though still regularly and when I can help, I like to try and give a solution.

In reply to Palacio if you didn't get a reply then something went wrong with the uploading. You would have been given an automatic reply when you successfully uploaded it.
You only had to wait for approval. (which took the time which is why I never uploaded to the file section after the last 2 month wait for approval)

Anyway.... if anyone knows how to fix it ...Can you Fix it please ;)

I keep peeking in but I'm in X-Plane 11

I just uploaded a helicopter training scenery to xplane.org that was inspired by my days training at KMSO. It has the boxes, pylons, hover circles and 4 naval ships that all have helipads. To find it, search for NZHTG (New Zealand Helicopter Training Grounds).

I think that X-Plane may (now) hold the key to reviving the site. That wasn't quite true in the past but I think with the recent launch of XP11, the lack of any organized rotary wing training in XP11 and the fact that there are a number of rotorheads over there who would love some kind of camaraderie and organization... I think the time may be ripe.

I'd hate to see the place go too... there is so much here that benefits people and it can keep benefiting people for many years to come. I've started pointing XP people over here so they can learn from the site and I hope their participation will help revitalize the place.

But unless there is a new version of FS with a modernized engine on the horizon, then X-Plane is going to be the place to be. This is especially true since it now has the processing power to do actual air flow modeling over the model rather than use the old table look up method of determining flight characteristics.

Interesting comments.  I do agree HC has gone quiet for some time now.  JoinFS is a very good replacement for FSINN.  And, there is a HC JoinFS server active.  So, if you install and use JoinFS and the HC TS servers you will still be able to fly with other folks.  The only difference at the point using JoinFS your flight time will not be logged into the HC pilot database.  This is not important to me, but, it may be for others.  The training program is still active, but, with few participants.  There is only one IP left, Hook360, and one CIP, Den.  However, I know they are still interested in providing instruction.

How to get more people flying again is the problem.  In the past there were some scheduled flights, but, most of the time folks were just online flying.  Summer is alway slower, perhaps as the winter weather comes on more folks with come online.

I too hope HC doesn't continue to go down.

By the way, JoinFS allows all sims to fly together, so whether you are using XP, FSX-SE, or P3D, you will be able to see each other.

Might be time for someone to post a new multiplayer page on the website to include the JoinFS info as no such post has been made here by any staff.

Might make it busier if we knew about it! lol

I just looked at JoinFS and their forums say that they were still working on XP compatibility as of April and now the header of the page says that the development status is "inactive". I'm thinking the only way to get together is VATSIM

Well crap.  I honestly thought JoinFS supported XP.  My bad.  It does however, support FSX, FSX-SE, and all versions of P3D.  There is a note on the Multiplayer page of HC about JoinFS.  It has a link to the JoinFS website and from there you can get to another web page to download the current version of JoinFS.  Set-up is easy and connection to the HC JoinFS server is easy as well.  Model matching is much better than FSINN and it is a very stable and smooth multiplayer environment.  If anyone wants to try HC JoinFS server and needs help getting set-up let me know and I'll make time to help.

By the way, even though the JoinFS forum website indicates the forum is "inactive", the forum is still monitored and supported by the JoinFS developer.

Missing the days of flying around 4S2 and KMSO with Jordan's 412 and Owen's B206! I was watching the Bellfest video posted and heard "Player Joined" on teamspeak for the first time in 5-6 years and instantly missed it.

I need to build a new PC but have been so far out of the loop I don't even know where to start!

Danny,

I know that FSInn and JoinFS are established here but that still leaves a large community of enthusiasts (XP) who have no organization out in the cold.

That's why I suggested VATSIM. On there, New Zealand is all but deserted. No one's going to complain if we take over that little corner of the world and fly in uncontrolled airspace.

Being able to have hovercontrol available to anyone, regardless of their sim, could be the shot in the arm that the place needs and, at the same time, provide much needed organization to the XP helicopter community.

Where to start? That's easy. A 1050ti. It is by far the best value video card out there. Current generation (DX12) for less than $175.

If you're going AMD, then the FX series is the only choice that makes sense. Avoid the A series and skip the 9000 series CPUs, even the AMD rep says that they're a failed attempt. Best bets are the FX8370 and FX8350. Great bang for the buck, but out of the box they're in the I5 class, the I7's still are ahead of both in performance.

But the I7 requires a mortgage. You can get the FX8350 for under $175, and I think that's with a cooler.

Do your homework, I wrote the above as a place to start from, not the end-all.

I absolutely agree.  It would/will be great when the HC server can accommodate all flight sims.

I sent an email to the developer of JoinFS and asked about the status of XP development.   He indicated he was going to start looking at XP compatibility in October.  Keep your fingers crossed.

I'm still around, just haven't been very vocal, I just got a computer I can start flying with again. so I will start playing with ChopperWorld X and placing some landing pad objects with ADEX. I used to know how, but probably forgot everything.

Is that Dodosim Huey out yet?  :D

Glad to see you guys are all still around.

Cheers
Gary

Yes, I received the "automatic reply". And after that, I complained several times "here" about this fact. But nobody replied to my complaints, so I moved to another sites. Years ago this was my reference web in helicopter simulation but know it is not because it is dead. Simple as that.

Wait... I just noticed a detail in Manilow's post when it was quoted:

"Since the online flying went all about training away from the fsinn system.

No-one was around to fly with on the hovercontrol server. When training was on Fsinn at least you could see something happening here. But there's no-one practising at the hover circles at KMSO anymore. I know the training isnt done like that now..."

Training is no longer done with a gaggle of miscreants laughing, joking, doing fun flights and coaching each other in practice??? It moved OFF of the multiplayer server???

Whiskey Tango... WHAT?!?

Oh nononono. That would kill this place deader than dead inside a month. The training and info are great but come on... we all know it was the camaraderie and silliness that made this place great and kept us coming back four, five, six days a week.

Having Bats come in and yak about his shift; laughing about the insider things that go on in a power plant, and then wondering if that new knowledge is going to keep you up at night.

And I'd never know how to race a helicopter down a mountain biking path in Moab if it weren't for hanging out with Ted.

####, it took me six months to practice to the point that I could pass the CP. Do you really think I'd have sat at home, doing it by myself without human interaction, for six months? Are you nuts?

This place was fun! And the people made it that way. Without multiplayer, without being able to come in and hang out, coach each other and then tear off in helicopters to try something stupid and new... without those things this place would never have been even a pale shadow of what it was.

Without those things, what would the point have been? To read some articles, get some scenery and ask tips?

We have that everywhere else. I mean everywhere else. What we only got here was the ability to come in at 4PM on a Tuesday and ask someone to watch you round the pylons and see if they have any tips. Or coach each other in the hover circle.

Or say the heck with "working" on technique and instead spending the day tearing around NoE, "leaves in the skids", as we chased each other around and even down the highway at 5 feet AGL.

Without those things to keep you going, no one is going to sit at home and diligently put in the practice it takes to pass a CP. I wouldn't have.

So I'm more convinced than ever that it's important to get us all together. If X-Plane people could come over to the existing servers we would but we can't. But the FS folks can be up and running on VATSIM inside half an hour.

I only need the locations of the 4 pylons and a little fine tuning for placement on the boxes and the X-Plane version of KMSO will be set.

But:

From FS I thought KMSO was some sleepy little airport that was uncontrolled and quiet enough for us to practice at. NOT SO!

Look at google maps. There is a heavy sitting there along with a number of medium range commercial airliners!

Yes, a heavy. X-Plane's stock scenery is a lot closer to real life than FS and that means that KMSO is busy. Really busy.

Like frame rate impacting kind of busy.

I love the old KMSO but I'm taking about a 10fps hit at the hover circles compared to the practice area in NZ, and I have forests filled out to max trees. That's how complex KMSO is on X-Plane.

I think I'll make a video, just for the fun of it.  :p

By the way, not only is KMSO busy enough to be controlled, it's got a feed up on Live ATC dot net.

I need to say on behalf of the staff they have done very well for being around since 2002. This is the only place I hang out not interested in any were else don't have the time. Training never made the online flying go away it just got better more realistic. If someone wants to do training there moved to the training channel in TS not to bother anyone. Training is done in shared cockpit mod IP & student who ever host is the server. Others may join if you have the IP address of the host it's nice to have traffic in the air. For all the new PTS info all you have to do is go grab the files in the training communication-general on TS. It is a good coarse well set up I liked the change and challenged the coarse it was interesting more heart attack feeling than a hover circle. As old school go's we can do training in stock bell 206 or Dodo 206 FSX box or FSX-SE. your choice. As far as what server to use is your choice FSINN still up and running for Hovercontrol. I recommend JoinFS hovercontrol server for your online flying you see smooth landings and doors opening and closing. I would recommend more activity on Hovercontrol TS TeamSpeak to start with. Live communication goes up to the top faster  I think vertical here what goes up goes down.
