I am a 72 year old with a love for helicopters. I have been struggling along in FSX, then FSX-SE and have managed to get somewhat proficient. I see a lot of posts on the Facebook group that seems to show X-Plane 11 as the preferred platform for helo flying. I am curious what is the most common platform for you, and what the big differences are between FSX and XP-11 with respect to flying helicopters.

Hi Habu,
I use x-plane 10 in combination with Dreamfoil produced helicopters.
These ingredients make for a fairly realistic, in my opinion, flight experience.

Not an in depth review I'm afraid just my 2 cents.

Regards,

Going from FSX to x-plane 10 (which is what I have) The included aircraft in x-plane are not too good.
The add on 407 by Dreamfoil is superb although I did have to alter the strength of the x and y axis in x-plane for my joystick as I would find it too sensitive at first. But most of it was my over working the stick. As soon as I got a Thrustmaster warthog and an extension (10cm) on it I could pop the sliders back up.
I must say though the most fun I have is in DCS World blowing up trucks/ small tanks etc while flying the Gazelle. Which again is an add on.
X-plane and DCS world have similar helicopter dynamics. FSX seems very tame after learning to fly helicopters in the other two sims.

I'm sure X-plane 11 is just as hard to fly just it will look newer better graphics etc. For what I fly out of dcs now its not finacially worth the upgrade to me from x-plane 10-11

X-Plane 11 is the way to go BUT it takes some work to setup.

Hey, it was the same way in this place 12 years ago, when I joined.

I made a video series for beginners and those new to X-Plane. It should be noted that there are two versions of the Bell 429, one for XP10 and another for XP11.

AFAIK, the 429 is the only freeware aircraft that handles worth a darn. All the others, especially the stock ones, are so twitchy as to be uncontrollable.

The videos go into the 429, setting up JoystickCurves and some helicopter basics. Most of you here, especially CP and above, will only benefit from the first parts that go over setup in XPlane. (Setup does go halfway into the second video, covering a head tracking software that is recommended. Even the free trial version helps!)

If you are looking to get XP, I strongly suggest XP11. Out of the box it's light years beyond most anything else and when you start adding things, it gets a lot better.d

I would love to see this place revitalized, there are a ton of rotor heads over there who have nowhere to train or practice together and they could give this place a whole new life.

The video series I made is here:

I moved from FS9/FSX to X-Plane about four years ago when the 64 bit version for XP10 came out. Now I have removed all MSFS from my computer.
XP11 is great, it is a steep learning curve but when you get there well worth it.
The Bell 429 I produced is a good example of what you can do.
https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/39269-bell-429/
Adding scenery is simple and more and more coming out.
The AH64 and CH47 I produced here for FS9 I hope one day to do a X-Plane 11 version.

NCD, you and bluebell are the reason I am here! :D

I haven't used FSX/P3D for Helo's yet but I love XP11 and the 429. Looking forward to when DreamFoil update the AS350+ for XP11. It kinda works now but the 429 is def where it's at.

Hi bluebell and NCD

I have just joined up and am really enjoying the B429.
Just loaded the KMSO and NZHTG scenery.
The later is creating a scenery load error.
I posted an error log on the ORG just now.

Heavly into XP, FSX is now on the shelf gathering dust.

Hey Yonker,
We should be on Teamspeak from 1130 GMT if you want to join us.

Also go to http://www.dafsim.com/downloads.php and select the option to apply as a single glue user as we're using this for the multilayer for XP

I would love to, but 11:30 PM?

Afraid that for me I should be asleep in my bed.

Best I can do is 3-4 hours earlier.

Unless anyone else is on a similar time zone to me, just not possible.

It was 11:30 AM GMT, will be the same time to-morrow.
Which time zone are you in?
Make sure you get DAFSIM.

I am usually online around 2-3pm Greenwich Mean Time.
Or later in the evening.

A few of us are going to try to do a regular thing at the same(ish) time each day, and maybe an hour or 90 min later on weekends.

Right now, that time is 11AM UTC. That's about as early as I can go here (7AM) and it's about as late as some of our friends down under can go.

Those aren't hard and fast times, just a guideline that we aim for.

We're using DAFSIM and if anyone is still doing MSFS scenery I have everything needed to make NZHTG in FS so that everyone can fly in both places, since the X-Plane version of KMSO is usable, though not polished.

Hope to see you there!

Just making sure that you filled out the form for a single user request, it's different than registering to their forums.

They got back to me within about 48 hours of sending the form.
