A few people said they would like to see regular updates on progress in another thread so here goes:

This will be huey news only and updates will be irregular. There won't be any tutorials, just progress reports, the first development shots are going to look very messy.

The model is an early (ie Vietnam era) UH-1H with a detailed model and systems. Work is carried out in between commercial projects and the number of variants depends on how much time. A release date won't be posted until things are finished but I do have a timeline in my head.

So, what is new, A 3d model went out to testers last year and a couple of pics of that version went out. Since then a new fuselage has been made (the old one had some errors because I had been working from faulty drawings).

At the moment I am creating the master textures and fsX "bump map", If these fit well then the exterior is correct and will be fixed. This shot looks pretty ugly, this texture will become the basis for the bump map and a more subtle skin will be applied later. This shot shows that the engine nacelle has a problem aft of the mast and a stretcher is poking through the door where I have narrowed the body profile. The pale green box visible through the window is the seatbelt mount on the copilots seatback.

The next pic is part of the VC roof panel, again a crude texture has been applied; this time it allows me to place the CB's and switchgear. You can see from this shot that this is not a low poly model like Jordan's huey - you should be able to make out the complex shape of the upright in the centre of the screen, the hand grips set into the roof (blue), wiper box (bottom left), there is a cable run too but it is hard to see in that untextured shot.

Thanks for the positive comments.

I was originally going to articulate and animate the rotorhead but I think I will probably leave it static so that I can make other areas more complex, such as a "bone animated" crew which would be visible much more of the time. These compromises always have to be made and I want an impression of complexity without hitting frame rates significantly.

The rotorhead will not be tilted to it's correct angle until the last minute, it make geometry changes much simpler with everything horizontal and vertical for the moment.

A couple of shots of the mast, some of the detail was left out of this build, the textures can be ignored they are my construction guides for the bump map.

Haven't had a chance to pay that visit yet unfortunately. All the changes are just part of the constant revisions; that is the way I tend to work, like doing a sculpture.

I am very pushed for time at the moment I have managed to run a few checks so that I know I am safe to start deleting all the clutter and surplus parts from the Gmax file.

This shot shows a test of the bump map in fsX on the bare metal fuselage (trust me, it will look ok when the terxtures are added!). Not perfect but heading in the right direction so I am happy with it as a start point . A close look should show the mesh in the engine nacelle, a few louvres shut lines, rivets, window surround and latches (just fore/aft of the meshes). The small louvresin the centre of the shot were not very crisp, this might be because of the fast and dirty technique I used which was'nt the official MS formats and technique - I didn't have the time just for a trial build.

Looking good Mark.

I have a question though do I get a discount for the keyboard I am going to have to replace because of the drool.

I forgot I had this shot, similar to the last one but has some colour, remember this isn't a finished texture, it just has some of the surface releif without any dirt or ripple etc.

Just by the exhaust you can see a jagged line where  the self shading doesn't like the way I did the mesh, something to watch for if you do your own models. From this I can see that I have made some of the panel lines too deep and the sliding door tracks not deep enough.

The small louvres look a lot better though in the centre

Keyboards are free to anyone who calls in person - keep your next one on top of your screen, it works for me, builds your shoulders up too!

Wow ... I can't wait !  :p

Since i have the DODO 206, that is the only bird that i fly with.

From time to time, i have a ride with a Puma or an AS 350, but it leaves me without conviction, as i know the behaviour of the Advanced 206 is like the real thing, then the other helos are kinda toyish ... Of course, there are many exceptions like Jordan's 412, etc ...

So, the DODO Huey will be fantastic and my VISA is heating up.

Go, boys ! Go !

Cheers,

André.

I'm sure you won't want me to trouble you... :D

I reckon the 3d model will need checking over in about 2 weeks time, maybe a little less. That will give me a chance to strip out the rubbish, alter all the minor components to match the recent changes and create master textures for the VC/panels.
