Hi Simon/Mark. you may already know however it is possable to share aicraft and use shift +T . basicaly Both must be in exactly the same model ( ie low skid + doors ) . after joining the others aircraft startup must done together (ctrl + E ) ie: 3 2 1 go.

Also joinFS at the moment in this one you can share cockpit ( Dodosim ) although the one joining will see insturments twitching !. as yet ( i'm waiting to get info) on being able to share control/controls . And thanks go to Adam Messner for helping me get this far !!! ???

Simon put a lot of work on this and I spoke to some of the Microsoft studio guys about it a few times.

The shared cockpit inFSX doesn't work quite as well as its documentation describes. It is a bit hit and miss on passing variables between machines.

It probably works more by accident!  Essentially the custom code running in each aircraft will be trying to be the "master".  So the one told to be the "slave" will experience twitching gauges, animations, etc. as they're not properly synchronising at the right level.

There's a huge amount of custom variables that need to be shared between the two instances and the added complexity wasn't deemed worthwhile.  Plus the MS documentation of how to do it for anything more complex than a few custom XML gauges was woeful.

Multiplayer works much better in steam.
I don't know exactly what they did but I think improving the shared cockpit was part of that revamp.
