Hows it going guys, so basically im 35 served in the us army for about 7 years as a 68f helo electrician. Now im a outside deck and fence contractor.

I have had fsx for many years but havent used it in about 6 years or so. Mainly flying jets. The pmdg 737 was the last aircraft that i really put time into learning.

I have been flying a lot in arma3 helos and figured i should come back and check out helos in fsx. And found it a bit hard to fly so came here to see if i can learn some stuff.

One question i have, do i need to get the steam edition. I already have the gold edition but as its on sale on steam just wasnt sure if everyone has made the switch or does it really matter.

And last question is this community active? Cause im looking at joining an active community.

Welcome.
Everyone has an opinion about which sim to use. I like the Steam edition as it runs better on my computer. Also, it is updated now and then without any doing on my part.

There is a wealth of help here at Hovercontrol. When you are ready to join a flying club or virtual airline, there are many to choose from. Some of us like to fly where and what and how we want without any schedule.  You are welcome to check out Virtual International Flying Club as they are slowly expanding the helicopter side of things. Your knowledge would be helpful too. Great bunch of guys. Fun too.

awesome and thanks for the reply. the standard edition seems to be working just fine for me atm and i dont mind doing the 100 or so "tweeks" to get it going. Im sure eventually i will change over.

So this place is active but no schedule? Im very cool with that if that is how it is. Do you guys do missions or any other type of group flights? Im not good with schedules i am more of a do what i want when i want sort of thing. But first i need to learn how to fly. Then I will worry about the rest.

I stress VIFC is a flying CLUB. At a club you gather to discuss flying, fly online or offline by yourself or with others. Fly what you want, where you want, etc. Yes we have hubs, but I have never been to one. I fly out of my own little town with my own missions. Others fly big iron and we have stuff for them also.  There are monthly tours available, etc. Just come on over and look us over. You will not find a better place to be. If at some time a virtual flying airlines is for you, you can still belong to VIFC and tell us of your expierences. Remember, this is a CLUB. And yes, we are very active.

Also, this Hovercontrol site is just brimming with knowledge to learn helo ops. Look around here. Most of these guys are very helpful too. We are lucky to have them.

Also, Steam is a much improved FSX. I would get it.

Happy New Year!

I agree, FSX-SE is a good running version which they have done a good job of tweaking, it has run well on two different rigs for me and I think my son got it for me on sale a few years back for like $5. It is hard for me to put my finger on why it seems better than FSX Professional, but I haven't looked back.

Just be warned that it FSX-SE doesn't come with the SDK, but you can download the Lockheed Martin P3D SDK (the earlier version-not the latest) and it works just fine.

Cheers

Thanks gman didn't realize about the sdk. And ya im getting a huge increase in fps with the SE edition.

Got most of my addons setup just need a couple more and im good to go.

Glad to hear that FSX-SE is working well for you.

As for whether or not this is an "active community", it is hit or miss, many users have come and gone over the years, and the admins have real world concerns to deal with, so I would say active community might be an overstatement. I can't even remember the last time there was something added to the files, but there are still plenty files in the system to be taken advantage of.

That said, it never hurts to post your traffic and see who comes along, there are still some who check in regularly.

Cheers

Community may not be as active, but the info is here. If you do purchase a payware model, be sure to search the forums for possible fixes or just general feedback.

Sadly, coming from the PMDG series there is really no helos that compare in complexity, at least you'll be back to more stick/rudder flying. I can recommend a few payware models that at least the developer looked over systems, again nothing too busy.

You will find help for the most part, some from real world Army guys like myself (retire in a month) and fans of all things helicopters.

FSX user until I switch over the P3D, sorry no help on FSX-SE.

I find that the Steam version runs better than my original version but some people hate it.

ResonToRun Welcome to Hovercontrol always good to see new members. Are online flying has been a little slow we do have a few that fly online. We have many people well experienced in helicopter how to operate and fly sim helicopters. We still offer training to help you perfect your skills if need. As far as box version vs fsx steam the box version there's no support for it. At least for the steam version there is help for the fsx platform they have done well with it so far.

And what is wrong with X-Plane IMHO, far superior to MS offerings.
Free update for the life of version, default way ahead of FSX, is 64 bit, but does need an recent and decent machine to get the best from it.
But you pays your money and get your choice.

And personally, I would stay away from Steam.

I agree completely with Hooker 360.

The Dovetail Games (Steam) version has been the best, most stable, hassle free version so far for FSX, which has been going strong for over a decade now.

After recently finding my backup disks for FSGenesis FSX version, my installation of FSX-SE has reached even higher levels of realism, why it took me so long to think about it I don't know.

Somewhere along the line I had been convinced myself that default FSX mesh values were on a par with *Justin Tyme's FSGenesis FSX mesh, they most certainly are not.
(*Justin sold the company some time ago, and FSGenesis is now a different entity I cannot recommend)

As for pushing the OP towards spending the money for a new sim such as XPlane VXXX, P3D VXXX, Aerofly FS 2, etc, etc, sure, if some folks have the discretionary funds to begin a new sim curve, repurchasing the sceneries and aircraft they have already purchased for FSX, go for it.

I know some guys who have spent massive amounts on the Aerofly FS 2 platform which requires bleeding edge computers and graphics cards, as well as massive solid state storage for the scenery files, good on them, but they are the exceptions, like those who spend massive amounts building full scale fully instrumented 737 cockpits on a par with the airlines.

However, many people can't afford to spend their discretionary funds on something they may not like, or may find doesn't run on their ageing computers ???

The fully updated FSX Steam edition has gone on sale many times for as little as $5, and runs better than ever on a wide range of less than state of the art machines.

As for Steam itself, other than connecting once in a while to make sure there have been no updates, Steam and or Internet connection are not required to run the program, you simply run offline.

When my son bought me FSX-SE as a $5 stocking stuffer for Christmas a few years ago, I ignored it for several months rather than abandon my FSX Pro version, bloated and still running at SP2, just barely supporting helicopter flights.

After I finally got around to installing FSX-SE I was astonished at how well it ran, after copying over my favorite aircraft from the Simobjects folder, and my Addon Scenery folder, I had all of my sceneries and my ChopperWorld X landing towers and helipads right where I placed them, and now with my FSGenesis FSX mesh I am loving it.

Cheers

Thanks Gman... There was a poll start last year asking what flight sim was more commonly used I be leave it is still open for voting. As it shows most still use FSX as Gman mentioned and pointed out Fsx doesn't brake the bank of most users. I have been at this for many years and have done many up grades to stay a float with it takes to make a nice flying machine. My status and as far as Hovercontrol go's we still are a FSX platform online flying and training community. I have X-plane but hardly ever fly it most folks here use Fsx platform.
